Who we are
EssayMarker is run by Athnx (Timothy Kofi Amo), based in Winneba, Central Region, Ghana. This page says what EssayMarker keeps, why, who else handles it, and what you can ask us to do. You can reach us at kofiamo.timothy@gmail.com or on +233 24 825 2444.
Who uses it
Teachers sign in with their email address. Pupils never sign in and never use the app: their teacher photographs their work.
Pupils are children
- Most pupils whose work is marked here are children. We use their work only so their teacher can mark it.
- The teacher and the school decide whose work is photographed. The school should tell pupils and their parents that work is marked with EssayMarker.
- A parent can ask us what we hold about their child, or ask us to correct or delete it. Contact us, or ask the school.
What we keep about teachers
- Your email address, and a record that you are signed in. You need an email address to use EssayMarker. Without one, you can't sign in.
- The schools and classes you create or join, and the email addresses of the teachers you invite.
- The name and date of each exam you mark.
- Your credits: what you were given, what you spent, what was refunded, and what was taken back.
- Your payments: the pack, the amount, the currency, whether you paid by card or mobile money, and Paystack's reference for it. Paystack takes your payment details on its own page. We never receive your full card number, your mobile money PIN or your card PIN.
What we keep about pupils
- The pupil's name as the teacher types it. Each script is saved under a name, so the marks reach the right pupil.
- If the teacher keeps a class list: each pupil's name and an optional index number.
- Photos of each script's pages, and of the question paper.
- What EssayMarker read off each script, the marks and the reasons for them, the marks drawn on the page, the comment, and any mark the teacher changed.
We do not ask for a pupil's age, date of birth or contact details.
What we do not do
- We do not keep your IP address or browser details in our database.
- We use no advertising, analytics or tracking tools.
- We do not send marketing emails.
- We do not sell anyone's information.
Why we use it
- To read and mark the scripts you send, and show you the results.
- To sign you in.
- To take payment and keep your credit balance right.
EssayMarker suggests marks. A teacher decides them. The teacher sees what was read and every mark, and can change any of them.
Who else handles it
We use these companies to run EssayMarker. Some of them keep data outside Ghana, for example in the United States.
- Anthropic reads the photos and marks the essays. It receives the photos of the scripts and of the question paper, the pupil's name as typed, the class name, the exam name and the text of the question paper. Anthropic deletes these within 30 days and does not use them to train its AI.
- Cloudflare stores the photos.
- Neon runs our database.
- Vercel hosts the website. Like any web host, it receives the technical details of each visit, such as your IP address.
- Resend sends the sign-in email, school invitations, and our own alerts to Athnx about payments. It receives the email address and the sign-in link. For an invitation it also receives the school's name. For a payment alert it receives the teacher's email address and the amount.
- Paystack takes payments. It receives your email address and the amount, and collects your payment details itself. Paystack keeps its own payment records, as the law requires of it.
Who can see your marking
- You can see everything you mark, and only you can change it.
- Whoever runs a school (a school can have more than one) can read the marking you do for its classes. They keep reading it even after you leave the school.
- Whoever runs a school can also see your email address, and which marking is yours.
- Other teachers at the school cannot see your pupils' scripts.
- Everyone in a school can see and edit its class lists.
- Your credits and payments are yours alone. The school cannot see them.
- If you leave a school, you keep your marking.
What stays on your phone
- We use cookies only to sign you in and keep you signed in.
- The app keeps only its own files on your phone. With no connection, it opens to a page saying there is no signal. It does not keep the pages you open.
- Pages you photograph wait on your phone until they are uploaded, then leave the phone.
- Signing out does not remove pages still waiting to upload. On a shared phone, let every page upload before you hand the phone on.
How long we keep it
- Scripts, photos and marks stay until the teacher who marked them deletes them.
- Deleting a class's marking for an exam removes its scripts, photos and marks.
- A pupil's name on a class list stays until someone in the school removes it. A pupil with marked scripts can't be removed until those scripts are deleted.
- Anthropic deletes what it received for marking within 30 days.
- Records of credits and payments stay after the marking is deleted.
- There is no button yet to close your whole account. To ask for that, contact us. We will delete your marking, your photos and your place in each school. We keep the record of your credits and payments, because money records must be kept.
Keeping it safe
- Photos are kept in private storage.
- Your phone's browser is told not to keep a copy of any photo.
- In the app, only you and whoever runs the school can open your marking.
- If we learn that someone has got into information they should not have, we will tell the Data Protection Commission and the people affected as soon as we can.
What you can ask us
You can ask us:
- what we hold about you, or about a pupil whose parent you are
- to correct it
- to delete it
- to stop using it
Contact us at kofiamo.timothy@gmail.com or +233 24 825 2444. We reply within 21 days. If you are not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Data Protection Commission of Ghana.
